Fat & Furious Burger is a self-initiated project born from the collision of two strong appetites. Thomas Weil & Quentin Weisbuch (who founded the Graphic Design & Art Direction studio Furious) were so bored of random sandwich at lunchtime they decided to cook some crazy burgers in their little kitchen. It soon became a ritual: each week they improvised, experimented, and created new ways of cooking, representing their burger in very short lunch break. “It takes about an hour and a half to find an idea, run to a supermarket to get everything, cook, take a shoot and eat”, they say. Inspired by everyday headlines and recent events, they’ve created a homage to Neil Armstrong after the great astronaut’s passing. The duo is planning to team up with many more restaurants while continuing to imagine and consume new, wilder burger creations. How did you start taking photos for Fat & Furious Burger ? Where did the original inspiration come from?
As we were so bored of random food at lunch, we started cooking together. It soon became kind of a ritual : improvising and experimenting new ways of cooking a burger in very short lunch break. It’s about an hour and a half to find an idea, run to a supermarket to get everything, cook, shoot and eat. We didn’t excpect this project to go viral: Back in 2012, we decided to launch our blog to show our crazy pics to our friend… never expecting it would be such a buzz!
How much does each burger cost?
From about 5 to 50 euros. It depends if it’s wrapped in gold foil or not ! (such as the «My name is Bun, James Bun Burger»).
Where do you get ideas for your images?
Headlines from newspapers, Everyday life… anything inspiring.
How do you set up your shots? What goes into your process?
We only take a few minutes to shoot our burger so we can take our time eating it ! At the beginning, we were shooting with our iphones in our small kitchen. Now we have our own studio with a proper kitchen and photographic material. Getting pro!
Do your burgers taste good or are they just beautiful? Do you eat them after shooting?
Of course we do ! It’s our lunch time and we’re starving ! Sometimes it’s a great surprise, and sometimes kind of a fail.
What is your personal favorite creation on your website?
One of our favorites is the Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Burger we created in collaboration with a great burger restaurant in Geneva called «Le Calamar». We were very excited to work on a global Burger event : including the creation of a delirium burger recipe, the creation of crazy posters & designs for the event’s communication, and above all creating a new food tasting experience.
Were any of the pictures particularly hard to shoot or burgers
challenging to make?
Each one is challenging in a way, because it’s all about trying something new each week. We never know how it’s going to taste like or even look like.
