Paris born photographer Raphaël Année grew up in Crépy-en-Valois – a little town located 60 kilometers next to the capital – and studied graphic design in 2011 at ESAD in Amiens, where he picked up photography as a way of self-expression. At first, he discovered the aesthetic and the banal, and just took his own moments and friends, focusing his work on the basic component of life. However now, his photography is inspired by the rough and emotional streetlife around him. Check out the interview below and visit his website www.raphaelannee.com for more images.
How would you describe yourself in one sentence?
A fragment of the universe.
Whom do you look up to?
Does anyone know?
Are there any personalities that have contributed to your successful career path?
I’m so young, this question is for people who have the merit to have a career, I do my best to express myself honestly and put myself in my work. I don’t believe in limit or style. My friend photographer helps me a lot or people in music like Wilow Amsgood really help me to develop my work and myself. I’m helped by everything. Everything is how you interpret life. I’m very inspired by philosophy, taoïsme, magnum photographer and more, everything is interpretation.
How did your photographic career start?
The direct link of reality with photography makes it very special and unique, very nigh of the real essence of life. You know, things are beautiful in their overall; in photography I can create a new harmonious overall to show the beauty of the instant. It makes you live in the present.
What was your favourite project and why?
This is life. I do not think there are any other projects, there are derivatives but nothing more.
What was the biggest challenge you’ve faced during your career as a photographer?
My feeling. as I said just now, everything is about your interpretation. Human need to grade their reaction to act in the good way, even evil requires a particular reaction to make the best of it.
Do you have a favourite quote that describes what you truly believe in?
The only things who can be against you is you
How do you define creativity?
Creativity is a different way of expression and interpretation, you need to feel and rebroadcast the universe with your feeling and smartness.
If you had one advice for someone seeking to live a creative life, what would you tell him?
Don’t think, Feel!
What do you know now that you wish you knew at 21?
Everything is connected.
Is there anything for which you would be ready to give up your passion of photography?
I am not attached to what may happen, that things happen and I would act.
