Malaysian artist Monica Lee creates amazingly photo-realistic images with graphite pencils. Obsessed with details, she spends around 3-4 weeks to complete her drawings. She pulls her inspiration from photographs, usually of people, and then creates these seemingly immaculate copies. Visit her Facebook site and Instagram for more of her works and don’t miss out the interview below. Also check out Franco Clun for more graphite drawings.

Whom do you look up to?
Dirk Dzimirsky and Paul Caden. Their hyperrealism work is just mind blowing. And
other artists on instagram that I got to know. I admire their passion and willingness to
share their skills with other people.

Who or what has been the biggest influence on your way of thinking?
I’m a big fan of motivational quotes and books. It always motivates me to work
harder and to not give up.

What was your favourite project and why?
I enjoy every piece that I worked on. I love seeing a blank piece of paper
slowly transforming into a piece of art.

What made you want to become an artist?
I loved to draw as a child and wanted to become an artist but it kinda got forgotten
as I grew older. In 2013, I decided to pick up the pencil again just for fun. And I
realised that I still love drawing. So I quit my job and followed my passion.

What was the biggest challenge you’ve faced during your career as an artist?
The biggest challenge was during the early stage of being an artist. Wandering
whether your work will be good enough or will I be as good as other great artist
out there.

How would you describe yourself in one sentence?
Too obsessed with details.

What`s your personal motto?
Do what you love and work hard to make it happen.

How do you define creativity?
Coming up with something different and making it happen.

If you had one advice for someone seeking to live a creative life, what would you tell him?
Believe in yourself and never give up your dream.

What do you know now that you wish you knew at 21?
I wish I knew that I had the potential to draw like this.

Is there anything for which you would be ready to give up your passion of art?
Nope. Drawing makes me happy.
