Jean-Paul Bourdier

Jean-Paul Bourdier studied at the Beaux Arts School in Versailles and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has been teaching architecture in Senegal and in many US universities and is now a Professor of Architecture and Photography at the University of California, Berkeley.

“Leap Into The Blue” is a photography book by Bourdier with 240 photographs featuring the interplay between body and earth. The artist creates each vibrant scene through the intersection of photography, performance, body art and acrobatics, using the State’s western deserts as the background of his images. “Rather than being a mere recording of an encounter between event and photographer, the photograph is an event of its own: long prepared, and yet full of unexpected moments; a still manifestation of an encounter between desert light, body light and camera eye”, he says. His work attempts to bring forward the body as our most intimate tool of perception. It challenges the mind’s eye and encourages the viewer to look at the world from a different perspective. All his photographs of flying bodies, cliff paintings and landscapes have been shot on analog film without the use of digital technology.
