Born in 1983 in Dortmund, Germany, Jan Q. Maschinski graduated from the University of Applied Science in Bielefeld with a major in Art and Design Photography in 2014. Currently undertaking his master’s degree in photography at the FH in Bielefeld, a great part of his work exposes inner conditions on the outter body. His photo series “Vortex” deals with mental and psychic experiences, presenting improbable portraits of individuals in awkward moments. Attempting to portray concealed emotions, feelings and reactions, the subjects seem stoned and empty inside, as if thoughts were seperated from their bodies. It’s not the physical body that plays an important role, but the repressed mental state which becomes the fictional story of the images.
