Haroshi is a Japanese skateboarder and self-taught sculptor who combines his passion of skateboarding and sculpting by creating stylish wooden art pieces out of trashed skateboards. In order to make his sculptures, the artist deconstructs his skateboards, then carves, paints and polishes each piece before assembling them into stylish works of pop-art. During the construction, Haroshi puts a broken skateboard piece into each of his sculptures, a practice inspired by Unkei, a 12th-century Buddhist sculptor who would place a crystal ball inside each of his Buddha sculptures. Through this each artwork is literally given a soul. For more of his works visit www.haroshi.com.
