Alain Delorme is a Paris based Photographer who graduated from Gobelins, l’école de l’image in Paris.  His distinctive project “Totem” has received extensive recognition and has been nominated for the Pictet Prize “Consumption” in 2013. “Totems” serve as objects or symbols for a group of people. Delorme’s work illustrates how these objects – particularly “Made in China” products are worshipped by consumer society. His photographs feature antlike workers trying to manoeuvre often-bizarre wares including tires, flowers, water gallons, furniture, and carts, amongst others.

At first glance the workers appear like heroes, able to carry and balance the staggering load of wobbly products stacked on top of each other. The second impression however, triggers a somewhat guilty feeling for the unseen workers of the new world’s factory. Obviously, Delorme has retouched the images in a purposefully exaggerated way to emphasise the issues around “overproduction, overconsumption and materialism”, drawing a fine line between economical growth and the increasing divide between rich and poor.
